What's Gotten Into My Soap?

The Problem with Antibacterial Soaps

Do you and your family use antibacterial soap? Antibacterial soaps are pervasive.  Every day, more and more Americans are using soaps, detergents, sanitizers, and ordinary household cleaning supplies containing antibacterial agents.  The antibacterial agent triclosan is now found in 75 percent of liquid hand soaps and tricloscarban is present in almost 30 percent of bar soaps.

What’s the problem?  There are several issues of concern with regard to antibacterial soaps.  First, unlike alcohol and peroxide, which also kill bacteria, antibacterial agents like triclosan used in soaps don’t kill bacteria indiscriminately.  Instead, these agents target specific processes in the bacteria and prevent them from spreading.  As a result, bacteria could eventually become resistant to triclosan nd similar agents.

According to research published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry in 1999, the use of antibacterial products may encourage the growth of drug-resistant stains of bacteria.  In 2000, the World Health Organization also suggested that the use of antibacterial products could be contributing to the increase in bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics.  Even the American Medical Association has expressed concerns that the use of antibacterial products may be contributing to the problems caused by overuse of antibiotics.

Second, using antibacterial products may result in an environment that is too clean.  According to the “hygiene hypothesis,” young children need some exposure to bacteria and viruses in order to stimulate their immune system.  Without this exposure, scientists speculate that children are more likely to develop asthma or allergies; initial investigations appear to confirm this hypothesis.  The use of antibacterials can also kill off good bacteria that live on the skin.  Without the protection of these beneficial bacteria, the skin becomes an environment favorable to harmful, resistant bacteria.  Because antibacterials strip off the skin’s essential layer of oil in order to remove all bacterial, antibacterial soaps tend to be drying and harsher on the skin than ordinary soap.

The most disturbing unresolved question about antibacterial soaps is whether they are even effective.  So far, there is no consensus as to whether washing hands with antibacterial soap is better, worse, or equally effective at preventing infections as simple soap and water.  Scientific studies have returned varied results that appear to depend on the specific type of bacteria.  The March 2004 issue of the journal Annals of Internal Medicine concluded that those who used antibacterial products developed symptoms like coughs, fever, and diarrhea just as often as those who did not.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, antibacterial soaps are unnecessary, and regular hand-washing is one of the most important means of preventing the spread of infection.  APUA, the Alliance for the Prudent Use of Antibiotics, advises that with proper hand-washing, regular soap and water will remove 99.9% of bacteria.  Good hand washing techniques is the single best way to eliminate “bad” bacteria.

If you would like to create an alternative to antibacterial soap, buy regular soap and add tea tree therapeutic essential oil.  In Europe, tea tree is used in hospitals to kill infections and bacteria.
