Unreasonable
RISK by Samuel E. Epstein, M.D. How to Avoid Cancer from Cosmetics and
Personal Care Products:
The Neways Story
This book explains how to
recognize carcinogens on product labels, boycott such products, and
shop for safe alternatives from non-mainstream industries and thus
reduce your avoidable risks of cancer. This is critical as we
are losing the winnable war against cancer, which now strikes one in
two men and one in three women in their lifetimes

Anti-Aging Choices and
Healthy Lifestyles Newsletters

Welcome all new subscribers
I don't know about you but I am really looking forward to Spring
this year. Today it was 55 and sunny in Illinois and the
forecast is for 70 next week. I can't wait! I know
it is only March and I am sure she has a few more surprises for
us but I can see the light at the end of the rainbow :-))
This month's newsletter is going to be a little different.
If you have read information on my website, you know I am very
passionate about getting the word out about the harmful
ingredients in products that we use everyday especially personal
care products such as shampoos, toothpaste, lotions, bath/shower
gels, baby products and household cleaning products, etc.
This month I would like to share a testimonial from a website
visitors. After you have read it, think about it, has a
similar thing happened to you and did you ignore it?

This is the message I received from Kelly:
Hi again. Would you like to know my story in more detail? Well,
here it goes:
For about 6 years of my life, I always seemed to go through
periods of emotional edginess. My family and I had tried to
figure it out for all that time. Every time I thought I came to
a conclusion, I ended up wrong. It wasn't an all the time
feeling, but I would go through day to week to month periods of
it. Some were even more than a month. Things that I would
normally just let roll off my back would cause me distress and
make me snap. I would find my thoughts jumping from one to
another rapidly. I tried to take control of it. Sometimes it
got really bad, however, I did not want to see a doctor about it
because I didn't think it was anything that a doctor could fix
without medicine and I am against psychiatric drugs. I figured
I could talk to my family and friends, and yes this did help a
lot. For a while I thought I was bipolar because I would go
through happy and unhappy periods. But then I realized that I
never actually got "depressed." It was more like
anxiety-nervous, edgy, irritable and jumpy.
One day, recently, I had a wonderful morning. I had one class at
college that day and it was cancelled. I came home in a normal
state. My mom was just about to take my grandma to the drug
store to pick up a prescription and asked if I would come
along. I said "sure". Before we left, I put on a bunch of hand
sanitizer. Then I went into the bathroom and used my acne
stuff. I was a little leery of it because it seemed that every
time I used the acne stuff, I would get irritable. I thought it
was only a superstition so I used it anyway.
Not even a minute later, I began to feel myself get hyper. The
acne stuff always did make my skin a little reddish and dry, but
I thought that was normal. (either that or I left it on too
long.) We got into the car and all of a sudden, I snapped at
something my grandma said and after we parked, I ran across the
street crying.
When we got home, I went into the bathroom and cried. I was
saying "Its that stuff! I swear, its that stuff!". Still
thinking it was a superstition. My mom walked past the bathroom
and heard me say that. She then asked "What stuff?" I wasn't
going to tell anyone about my superstition, but at that time I
had to. I got out and told her about it. Then it suddenly
popped into my head. I could have an allergy to that stuff!
Then it all cleared up like fog lifting from a valley! I recalled
that whenever I went into one of those states, I switched
shampoo or lotion or hand sanitizer. I remembered the worst
emotional time of my life-winter 2001. During that time, I was
always using these lotion sprays. I had about 5 different
scents. I used them more than 3 times a day and realized I was
even inhaling them, since they were a spray. I finally got to
the point where I could associate specific products with
specific times that I was in an anxious state.
So I decided I would look at the ingredients too compare and see
which one was in all the ones that affected me and which was not
in the ones that didn't. Not even 5 minutes into analyzing, I
found that propylene glycol was in all of them and NOT the ones
that had no effect! I had never heard of PG! Not even 10
minutes later, my aunt called to give my dad and me free plane
tickets to Arizona next winter. My aunt is a doctor. I asked
her if something in lotions, perfume and skin products could
cause anxiety. She said that it could not be a direct
correlation, but that it could certainly be an allergy. We
talked about it for a while. My family is known to have
allergies! I used to have Asthma, but grew out of it. I
immediately looked up propylene glycol on google and at the
bottom it said "also try propylene glycol allergy." It was all
skin (rashes and stuff)
Yeah, ok, I didn't really have a skin reaction from it...or did I?
I had been getting this rash for years and years-so long that I
got so used to it to the point where I didn't even think about
it when I heard the word "allergy." I was about to wash my hair
one day and just had a hunch to look at the label on the shampoo
and conditioner. Sure enough, propylene glycol! The bell rang
again! Every time in the shower, when I used that shampoo and
conditioner, my neck and shoulders would itch like crazy and I
would come out of the shower with red puffiness. That didn't
happen when I used my mom's shampoo and conditioner and it did
NOT have PG! I always noticed that I would often get a rash
wherever my hair touched my skin! My best friend recently noted
that I tend to itch my neck a lot. I recalled itching my neck a
lot while writing songs. It got disturbing. The lotion sprays
did cause me to itch a little and creams (with PG, of
course) itched and burned so bad that I stopped using it!
Turns out propylene glycol was the 2nd listed ingredient in the
lotion sprays (worst emotional time of my life) and also, there
was another type of propylene glycol listed directly after.
I am not the only one affected by the damn stuff! I was talking
with my friend at school today. I knew that she broke out from
certain lotions. The new lotion she bought was propylene glycol
free and she was fine! I described all my symptoms to her (the
rash from my hair, the shower thing and even the emotional
stuff). SHE AGREED WITH EVERYTHING!
Propylene glycol may be the cause of many allergies and even
anxiety for more people than we think! I have seriously
considered doing a survey and even my own little study on
myself, my friends and anyone who may agree to one. We think we
know the cause of a lot of things, but really do we? If we
thought that Childbirth Fever was a punishment from God and
found out later that it was microorganisms, then we can't say
for sure that we know the cause of all psychological disorders!
My aunt said that there can be neurological allergies too! Of
course, that only makes sense! You body can react to anything
in many ways! Mine obviously says "GET OUT!" to propylene
glycol!
Thank you for reading! I know it was long, but I think it was
worth it! It's just another added comment to your opinion. I
think its good to know that someone is really on your side. I
felt that way when I saw your website and I hope you can feel
the same about my e mails!

Does a member of your family experience any of the symptoms that
Kelly was experiencing or symptoms where there doesn't seem to
be a explanation? Check the labels on your shampoo,
conditioners, hair spray, toothpaste, mouthwash, lotions, bubble
bath, deodorants, cosmetics, moisturizers, bath/shower gels,
hand soaps, household cleaners, dish soaps, laundry soaps,
bath/shower cleaners, glass cleaners, etc. Is there a
common ingredient. Do your own experiment. Eliminate
the products that you think may be causing the problem and see
if the symptoms will subside.
