What You Need to Know About Shampoo and Conditioner

Did you ever wonder how we got started down the path of using hundreds of thousands of synthetic chemicals in every product in our daily lives? I have. I know that even a century ago, people bathed and washed their hair and their clothes with soaps and cleansers that were natural. What changed? Why did we stop using natural cleansers and soaps? Years ago, synthetic chemicals were not used in shampoos, soaps, or cleaning products. Today, synthetic chemicals (chemicals not found anywhere in nature) including toxic petroleum derived detergents are present in almost every shampoo, soap, and cleaning product on Earth.

Before the 1940’s cleansers and detergents were exclusively derived from natural fats, (i.e. coconut oil and palm oil etc…). The development of detergents derived from petroleum instead of the safer natural fatty oils, can be traced back to World War II. During World War II, German chemists invented the process of synthesizing detergents from petroleum when they were under an intense economic blockade by our allies and did not have access to enough natural fatty oils to meet their detergent needs. These German chemists found that their new petroleum derived detergents were much more powerful and therefore more effective for removing dirt, grease and oil from machinery than the milder ones derived from natural fatty oils. In addition, the petroleum detergents were less expensive to manufacture than the natural fatty oil detergents.

But, while petroleum derived detergents can de-grease any machine quickly and efficiently, they should never have been added to personal care products because they are toxic for human skin. When they are inserted into shampoos, soaps, and cleaning products, they remove the healthy and necessary components of hair and skin along with the dirt and oil. In fact, they completely strip the hair and scalp of all its oil and moisture which then impairs proper blood circulation thereby damaging the scalp and hair, not to mention the internal damage they do when they are absorbed through skin and stored in body tissues.

Most of the hair and scalp problems that people experience today are caused by shampoos containing these toxic petroleum based synthetic detergents and alcohols like sodium lauryl sulfate, or any derivative of lauryl alcohol, olefin sulfonate, murreth sulfate and others. In addition to these detergents many other toxic chemicals are added to shampoos (like propylene glycol, quaternium-15, etc…) that further stress the hair follicle, scalp and oil glands causing even more problems. It is estimated that one out of 6 women and 1 out of 3 men suffer from premature hair loss today, one out of 5 people suffer from dandruff, and still many others complain of flaky or itchy scalp.

How Healthy Hair Grows

The average life cycle of a hair follicle is 6 years. People naturally loose about 75 hairs per day. When hair falls out naturally, it is replaced by a new hair in a continuing cycle that repeats itself through out our lives. When a hair follicle is stressed by toxic chemicals in shampoos and conditioners it responds by shrinking. Once it shrinks to a certain size, it will prematurely release the hair, and disrupt the natural cycle of hair replacement. An oil gland responds to the stress of these chemicals by enlarging and secreting more oil than normal. If an oil gland is stressed long enough, it will eventually burn out completely and stop producing any oil. Because of the stress of these chemicals many people believe they have excessively dry or excessively oily hair, when really they have irritated oil glands.

Healthy Ideas: Uses for Epsom Salts (for frequently asked questions about Epsom Salts and other uses, e-mail me.)

• Remove Excess Oil from Hair: Epsom Salt soaks up excess oil from hair. Add 9 tablespoons of Epsom Salt to 1/2 cup of oily hair shampoo. Apply one tablespoon of the liquid to your hair when it is dry; rinse with cold water. Pour lemon juice or organic apple cider vinegar through the hair, leave on for 5-10 minutes, and then rinse.

• Hairspray build up: Combine 1 gallon of water, 1 cup of lemon juice, and 1 cup Epsom Salt. Combine, cover, and let set for 24 hours. The next day, pour the mixture into your dry hair and let it sit for 20 minutes. Then shampoo as normal.

AROMATHERAPY
To help chronically dry skin retain more of its natural moisture, Fair Oaks, California, Aromatherapist Victoria Edwards recommends this fragrant face and body oil: Add ten drops each of the essential oils lavender, Roman chamomile, neroli, rosemary and carrot seed to two ounces of a carrier oil such as almond, olive or sesame. (Carrier oils are available in most health food stores.) Apply the oil once a day after your bath or shower, while your skin is still slightly damp, says Edwards.

To make dry hair silky and manageable, add six drops each of lavender, and sandalwood essential oils to six ounces of warm sesame or soy oil, suggest Greenwich, Connecticut, Aromatherapist Judith Jackson. To apply the oil, says Jackson, part your hair into one-inch sections and apply the mixture to the scalp with a wad of cotton. Wrap your head in a towel and let the oils penetrate for about 15 minutes, then shampoo twice, she says.
