Lemon and Peppermint Essential Oils

About Lemon Essential Oil

Lemon essential oil benefits the skeletal and digestive systems and the skin.  Traditionally, it has been used for rheumatism, arthritis, anemia, and gout.  It can stimulate a lack of appetite and ease gastric distress, such as vomiting, diarrhea, ulcers, and gall stones.  As a skin remedy, it is excellent for clearing the complexion, removing broken capillaries and wrinkles, reducing redness and enlarged pores.  Use on insect bites, cuts, wounds, abscesses and boils. Don't forget...this is the most commonly used oil in water.  4 -10 drops to a liter of water will assist the entire body cleanse internally. That is, of course, if you drink the water.
Do not use Lemon essential oil on skin that will be exposed to direct sunlight.  This oil photo-toxic and may cause irritation or burning of the skin.

For cold and flu season:  You can use lemon juice to make a pleasant, though tart, mouthwash and gargle.  Often a sore throat is the first sign of worse symptoms to come.  The following gargle can be very effective in both alleviating pain and fighting those nasty germs that have already invaded your throat  It also helps against that nasty breath that sick people often get.
Lemon Gargle
  • 2 drops Lavender essential oil
  • 2 drops Lemon essential oil
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp baking soda
Mix all ingredients into glass of warm water.  Gargle until it is all gone.
For a nice, hot drink that is very soothing to a sore throat, try Lemon-Lavender Toddy:  Add one tablespoon honey and one tablespoon lemon juice to a mug of hot water.  Add a drop of Lavender for a comforting tea.
Warning:  Lemon increases photosensitivity of the skin, so do not apply before exposure to direct sunlight.  Lemon oil can cause skin irritation, so do not exceed 1 percent in any recipe  Always dilute Lemon oil.
Whiten Teeth:  Put on drop of lemon essential oil on your toothbrush w/toothpaste.  (If you have any type of infection in your mouth also add 1 drop of Tea Tree Oil.  - this also supports healthy gums.

About Peppermint

Peppermint essential oil is a good insect repellant and has value in treating the digestive, respiratory, and nervous systems.   Be careful, though!  Peppermint can irritate the skin.  Wash your hands after touching the bottle to ensure no essential oil will be transported accidentally, to your eyes or other sensitive areas if rubbed or touched.  Small children will be attracted to peppermint's fragrance, but keep peppermint out of their reach!
Use peppermint at first sign of a headache, or if you have nerve pain, mental fatigue, or if you feel weak.  When traveling, use it to assist in preventing travel sickness. Put one drop on your tongue and your will feel much better. Outdoors, it will repel insects, flies, and ants.
If you're uncertain how to use peppermint, mix it with a little carrier oil (our all-purpose mixing oil or our Tangible Lotion are excellent carries) before applying it on your skin.  Some of our customers actually use it neat, applying a drop or two directly to the area of pain, or on their heart if it is racing.  It can also be taken internally, to ease indigestion, nausea, stomach pain or flatulence.
For internal use, put a 2-3 drops in a vegetable capsule and swallow or put a drop in a small amount of water or juice after eating.

Essential Oil Recipe Ideas

Sore Throat - Mix 1-2 drops in a lotion and rub on throat – or put in glass of water and gargle.

Dilute Peppermint with oil or add to bath/shower gel, shampoo or moisturizing lotion. Very refreshing.

Sore muscles – use in a warm compress – get the same results as “Icy Hot” or you can mix 3-4 drops with a lotion and massage the sore muscle(s).

Tired feet?  Soak feet in warm water with 2-3 drops of Peppermint added.  Or mix with an oil or lotion and massage feet – very relaxing.  Great when combined with Agility Blend.

Add 5 drops of Lemon essential oil to your dishwater to disinfect dishes and cooking utensils.

Garbage Disposals: A great way to freshen you garbage disposal is to put your lemon or orange peels in it. Or, use a few drops of citrus oils!  About five drops of orange or lemon makes the garbage disposal smell great!

PMS - Mix 15-20 drops of essential oils per ounce of Natural Progesterone Cream (Geranium, lemon or orange work well and they are relatively inexpensive) will give you a luscious smelling cream that will be a joy to use.

Use lemon on your hands to kill germs you pick up when in public places.  Use a drop of lemon to disinfect your hands after using public restrooms.  Keep a spray bottle with lemon in your purse. Spray the seats of the stools and hotel rooms including vents.
