In the 1920s, a French-Canadian nurse named Rene Caisse began making an herbal preparation she would later call "Essiac" (her family name spelled backward). She learned of this remedy from a patient who had been treated with the preparation by a Native American in northern Ontario.

Over the next 50 years, Caisse tested and improved the formula until she had limited it to four herbs: sheep sorrel, burdock root, slippery elm, and turkey rhubarb. She also determined the best way to prepare the herbs and how to administer them. During this period, Caisse administered her preparation to hundreds of individuals.

Caisse was very protective of the formula -- she always made and administered the recipe herself. She never charged any of her patients, believing that it should be freely available to anyone who needed it. In the time since her death, several versions of her preparations have been published in books or made available commercially; however, new information has recently come to light regarding Caisse's actual formula.

 Our Cassie-Herbal Tea is intended to provide the beneficial effects of Rene Caisse's formula in a convenient format.

 KEY INGREDIENTS

Cassie isolated four key ingredients in her herbal preparation that aid cellular health and support longevity. They include the following:

• Sheep sorrel (Rumex Acetosella) was identified by Caisse as the most effective ingredient. Sheep sorrel supports urinary tract health

• Burdock root (Arctium Lappa) is an herb used extensively in fold medicine. Burdock root encourages cells to complete their normal cell cycles. In addition, burdock root helps stimulate the immune system and functions as an antioxidant to scavenge free radicals

• Slippery elm (Ulmus rubra) contains fatty acids and fatty acid esters that encourage cells to reproduce at healthy rates. Slippery elm is also a common element in traditional holistic remedies and may stimulate the immune system

• Turkey rhubarb (Rheum palmatum) has been used extensively in fold medicine, and like burdock root, provides stimulation to the immune system and contains antioxidants that remove free radicals for optimal cellular health.
