Essential Oil Recipes

Oral Hygiene with Essential Oils

Your smile is an important part of your appearance. Aromatherapy can be a valuable addition to your daily oral hygiene, and essential oils may help you maintain good dental health.

Breath-fresh Mouth Rinse

  • 2 drops Peppermint

  • 2 drops Myrrh

  • 2 drops Tea Tree

  • 4 oz. distilled water

Mix all ingredients in a clean bottle. Swish a proper amount of the mix in your mouth after brushing your teeth or after meals.

When the gums or the tissues supporting the teeth become damaged or inflamed, gum disease may threaten oral health.

Gum Oil

  • Place the carrier oils and essential oil in container. Massage the mixture into your gums once a day, after brushing your teeth.

    Some general information

    • 1 drop of Lemon oil on your toothbrush may help whiten your teeth.

    • Lemon, Orange, Peppermint, and Tea Tree oils may help freshen your breath and keep bacteria away from your mouth.

    • Myrrh oil may support healthy gums

    Build Your Immune System

  • Your immune response enables your body to resist infections. If your immune system is strong, you can ward off most biological attacks or at least minimize their effects. If your immune system has been compromised, you are more vulnerable to diseases of all types.
    • To maintain a healthy immune system, your body needs exercise and balanced nutrition. Eliminate any infections that you currently have, such as yeast infections, parasites, respiratory congestion, or low-grade viral infections. Essential oils are the best natural medicines available to help the body heal. Medicinal essential oils can be as effective against bacteria as antibiotic drugs. Essential oils contain many chemical compounds which are lethal to germs. Unlike antibiotics, essential oils are not harmful to the human body when used properly

    Tips for Trips

Helpful hint when traveling:  Take along your favorite essential oils on all your travels; include peppermint, eucalyptus, and lavender.  In the car they change the environment and air quality quickly, making you feel somewhere other than in a closed vehicle.  Essential oils, especially eucalyptus, can also relieve driving stress and encourage alertness.
Traveling through time zones or long car trips can affect your body rhythms and you may experience fatigue, nausea, pressure, or nervousness.

You can make your own aromatic spray in a carry-on bag to help you to adjust to those changes.

    A delightful aromatherapy spritzer
    • 12 drops lavender
    • 6 drops geranium
    • 2 drops ylang ylang
    • 2 oz distilled water
Add essential oils to water in a spritz bottle, shake well, and use gently on your face or hands.
If you need a wake-up spritz, use peppermint instead of geranium and lemon instead of ylang ylang essential oils.
    • Ginger is an excellent general travel oil which helps to alleviate minor sea or car sickness. Two drops of ginger placed on a tissue and inhaled works very well.
    • All Purpose Formulation
    • For adults and children age 4 and over.  Literally an "all purpose' oil as it contains anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties.

    Carpet Deodorizer

    Ingredients:
    10 drops Tea Tree
    10 drops Lemon
    20 drops  Lavender
1-16 oz box of baking soda
Directions: Add the baking soda to a large bowl and then add the essential oils. Be sure to mix the oils into the baking soda well. Since lemon essential oil is normally yellow, it is essential that it is mixed well into the baking soda so that no undiluted lemon oil stains your carpet. This blend may be adapted to use your favorite essential oils, but strive to add essential oils that offer antibacterial and disinfectant properties to give the deodorizer an added benefit (the oils in this blend work to accomplish that). After you have blended the oils into the baking soda seal tight and set aside for 24 hours, then sprinkle on carpet and let set for 15 minutes, then vacuum up.   This deodorizer can be stored in a glass jar or airtight container.
You can, also,  drop several drops of essential oil on a cloth and put it in the collecting bag of your vacuum.

    AIR SPRAYS

Sprays are an effective method of using the essential oils for various reasons.  Water forms the base of the formula, and as essential oils are insoluble in water they can be dissolved in Exuberance Conditioner first.

    INSECT  REPELLENT

Warning: Don't use this insect repellent on babies. It's a little too harsh for their tender skin. A few drops of Lavender in olive oil would work nicely for young ones.

    BUG BITE MIX

Mix 4 drops Eucalyptus, 4 drops Lavender, 4 drops Rosemary, 4 drops Tea Tree and use in any of the following ways:

    • Add to 1 teaspoon witch hazel and 4 teaspoons water in a bottle. Shake before applying directly to skin.

    • Add to 2 ounces witch hazel and 8 ounces water in a spray bottle. Spray your surroundings and your skin.

    • Add to 5 teaspoons olive oil. Rub this oil mixture on your skin, especially on those pulse points on neck, wrists, and ankles which seem to attract such critters.

You won't be able to get through summer without some bites. Straight Lavender on the bite is a great treatment, but it's also a good idea to keep some of the Bug Bite Mix described below ready-mixed in a bottle for quick and easy application. This recipe also takes advantage of some of the calming properties of Chamomile as well as the anti-itch properties of Eucalyptus. This can be a somewhat aromatic potion.

Blend 2 drops Chamomile, 3 drops Eucalyptus, 3 drops Lavender and use them in the following ways:

    • Apply straight to the bite

    • Add to a basin of water for washing the affected skin.

    • Add the oil blend to 2 tablespoons cider vinegar, which you can dab onto the bites with a cotton ball.

    • You can also use a drop of Eucalyptus on flea bites.

INSECT BITES / STINGS AND ESSENTIAL OILS

Medical description: A bite or sting from an insect. If you get bit by a poisonous insect or experience any allergic reaction, be sure to see a doctor
Chamomile, cedarwood, eucalyptus, tea tree, and lavender oils reduce the swelling, itching, and inflammation and help stop allergic responses when you’re bitten or stung by an insect. For mosquito or other tiny insect bites that don’t demand much attention, a simple dab of one of these essential oils provides relief. If you’re bitten by spiders or stung by a bee, use a clay paste that contains essential oils. As the clay dries, it pulls toxins from the bite or sting to the skin’s surface to keep them from spreading. This method is also is good to draw out pus or splinters that are imbedded in your skin.

    SUNBURN STUFF FOR KIDS
To help your little ones who get too much sun, in spite of the SPF 100 stuff you probably reapplied several times - before lunch, not to mention all those applications after lunch, and the hat and the T-shirt you made them wear.
Add 3 drops Chamomile, 3 drops Lavender, 4 ounces tepid water to a spray bottle, Shake and spray.
Sunburn Stuff for Kids will soothe and cool that too=pink skin and make riding home from the beach a lot more comfortable for everyone.  If you make this potion ahead of time and store it in your cooler, take it out about an hour before you head home to give it time to warm up so as not to shock that tender, young skin

The following Sunburn Pain Remedy cools the heat and soothes skin's tendency to itch.  The skin-healing qualities of Lavender also help keep the skin moist so it doesn't turn into the papery, peeling stuff.
    SUNBURN PAIN REMEDY
Mix 8 drops Lavender, 4 drops Peppermint, 8 ounces water.  Mix the above ingredients together in a spray bottle.  The water can be any temperature that is comfortable for you.
When you know you got burned badly and peeling will probably follow, or you just want to replace some of the moisture that the sun took from your skin, use the following After-Sun Oil.
This blend cools, soothes and heals:
Mix 5 drops Chamomile, 2 drops Geranium, 10 drops Lavender, 2 ounces sweet almond oil, 2 ounces olive oil in a preferably plastic container.  Gently rub onto your sunburned parts.  You can also use 1 tablespoon of this mixture as a bath oil.
If you do peel, keep in mind that this is your skin's way of getting rid of a damaged layer and healing.  Use After-Sun Oil until you stop itching.  Itching is often a sign of healing.

    Sun Burn Remedy

Help Your Pet  Fight Fleas, Ticks and other minute Parasites
    with Essential Oils
NOTE:  Animals have a much stronger sense of smell than humans, so generally aim to use a minimum quantity of essential oil and increase the quantities if and when necessary.
Essential oils discourage the fleas, ticks and other minute parasites.  If you shampoo your dog, one of the easiest ways to deal with this problem is to add 1 drop of lemongrass to his shampoo.  Most dogs like the aroma and it gives them a nice fresh smell.  Large dogs like Labs will require 2 drops.  You can also add 4 drops of Lemongrass to 8 ounces of water in a spray bottle - spray the animal, their beds, and furniture and rugs where there may be fleas.

    FLEA COLLARS

Most commercially sold flea collars are made with highly toxic chemicals which can be absorbed through the skin of our pets, and us.  Cats often cannot bear being near these as they try desperately to lick and groom the area surrounding the collar only increasing the level of chemicals absorbed.
Fleas spend only about one-eighth of their life on an animal, so if the flea has gained entrance into your home via your pet the remaining seven-eights of its life will be spent in your pet's bedding or on your carpet and furniture.  Contrary to popular belief, fleas prefer walking to hopping about on their powerful legs, so spotting them isn't just a matter of waiting to see a little high-jumper.
An essential oil collar provides excellent protection against fleas and is very cheap and easy to make.  Buy a soft material collar - a cheap one from a market will do --and soak it in the following mixture:  1/2 teaspoon alcohol, 1 drop cedarwood, 1 drop Lavender, 1 drop Lemongrass, 1 drop thyme and mix with 4 garlic capsules OR 2 drops of the following mixture:  1 tsp vegetable oil in which 1 drop garlic essential oil has been diluted.
If you are using the garlic capsules, beak them open and add the contents to the mixture.  Blend your ingredients together and pour it over the collar until fully absorbed.  Leave to dry before putting around your pet's neck.  It should be effective for one month.
Blood is the fleas' only food, but when garlic is detected in it they will leave well alone.  Add 1 or 2 capsules of garlic to your pet's diet during spring and summer, depending on the size.

Choose from these oils for an aromatic bath or massage
