Basic Skin and Hair Care with
Essential Oils

Skin Profile Diagnosis
1 cleanse  | 2 rejuvenators | 3 activate  |  4 moisturize

Everyone has experienced some type of skin affliction that could be treated using Essential oils. Simple scrapes and cuts are common for those who work with their hands. Insect bites, burns caused by the sun or working in the kitchen, allergies, rashes, and swelling, all may be treated with the proper Aromatherapy treatment.
Skin is the body's largest organ, both for ingestion and elimination.  It is a major part of the immune system, too, protecting against the elements, and preventing harmful chemicals or too much water from entering the body. Stress, emotions, poor nutrition, and pollution all take a heavy toll on the skin. Essential oils act as transporters to carry therapeutic benefits to the skin layers; and they penetrate the skin, weaving their way through the intercellular fluids.  They also help improve the skin's condition by stimulating circulation.  Cell growth by phytohormone activity and cell regeneration, creates a fresher, more vibrant complexion. Stress reducing benefits also keep skin looking clear and calm.
Floral waters are the easiest way to use essential oils on the skin. Waters have the healing properties of the oil itself, and are well suited to sensitive skin. Make floral waters in a spray bottle if possible, for convenience. Blend 5 to 10 drops of the essential oil into 4 oz. of distilled water and use as needed. Essential oils may also be added to your lotions or moisturizers. However, because the oils are volatile, you cannot make up the preparation in advance. Pour some lotion into your hand; add 3 drops of oil and apply to your skin.
Just like your skin, your hair can be too dry or too oily.  It’s not actually the hair itself that produces oil, it’s your scalp, which is skin, so it’s usually the same type as your complexion.  If you have dry skin, you probably have a dry scalp.  If you’re skin is oily, then your scalp is like also oily.  Likewise, they are helped by the same remedies.
HINT:  If you're wondering what kind of complexion you have, you can try this experiment.  Go to bed one night without putting any creams, lotions, or anything on your face.  Cut three small strips of paper from a clean brown paper bag.  In the morning before you wash or do anything to your face, press a paper on your chin, one on your nose, and the third on your forehead.  Keep these on for at least five seconds each. If you have oily skin, you'll see a definite oil stain on the paper strip.  Dry skin leaves no oil on the paper.  Normal skin shows only a slight stain caused by a small amount of oil.
We want to point out that Aromatherapy is a complimentary or alternate form of healing. You should always consult a Medical Doctor prior to changing or replacing any form of medication.
Beneficial effects essential oils have on the skin.

  • They stimulate and regenerate the production of healthy skin cells quickly following burns, sun damage, or healing of wounds.
  • Essential oils soothe sensitive, delicate and inflamed skin.
  • Balance over or under active skin by regulating sebaceous secretions.
  • They can greatly reduce bacteria and fungal infections, as well as other related skin problems.
  • Oils Promote the release and removal of metabolic wastes.

ESSENTIAL OILS FOR DRY OR AGING SKIN & HAIR
The following essential oils are good for your dry skin and hair.  They encourage production of your own natural oils in your skin and scalp.  Many of these also increase the ability of your skin and scalp to hold in water.  Quite a few are anti-inflammatory oils, which are good for dry skin because they reduce skin irritation and puffiness that so often accompany the dryness.
Carrot seed, frankincense, geranium, helichrysum, lavender, rosemary,  rose, sandalwood. tea tree
ESSENTIAL OILS FOR OILY SKIN & HAIR
Oily skin has much luster, and may even be shiny from all the oil. Oil reflects light to give it a smooth, silky texture and a healthy looking glow.  It protects your skin from drying so that it takes longer to develop wrinkles.  However, having oily skin is not always as slick as it looks.  It creates coarser texture that is prone to enlarged pores and acne.  The real downfall is that the excess oil clogs your pores and then acts like a sponge to collect dirt and skin cells that are shedding that leads to pimples, blackheads, and infections. If you have oily skin, wash daily with an natural cleanser to remove the excess oil.
Just like oily skin, oily hair has an attractive shine, but too much makes it look dull, lifeless, and heavy.  You need to get to9 the root of the problem:  Roots of your hair where the oil is produced and where it concentrates.  Brushing your oily hair from the roots to the tips help to distribute the oils.  Wash it frequently and brush before hand to make it easier to remove the excess oil.  Don't use protein or balsam shampoos because they attract oil.
Here is a list of the essential oils that are best for oily skin and hair.
